Teaching our Kids to be Anti-Racist

I understand this is hard and may be uncomfortable for many, but this is so incredibly important. I can’t imagine worrying every single time my son or daughter would go outside for a jog or get in their car, that they could get killed. I can’t imagine my son being told that he was “threatening” a white woman just for simply watching birds in a park. ⁣

Let me start by saying, I am NOT a diversity expert. I recognize my privilege. I do NOT know what it feels like to be Black. But I am a mother. I am listening, learning, and growing. I’m learning about my own racial biases and having tough conversations. ⁣

This is what I do know: it is our job as parents and caregivers to TEACH our children to be anti-racist. It is not the job of teachers only. It is not the jobs of books only. It is not the job of toys only. And it is not the job of kids television shows only. These are all tools to help you as the parent teach your children. ⁣

It is important to LISTEN to your children and not be scared of their statements and questions. Talk to your children, be honest with your children, role-play with your children, and model being a good person for your children. It is also important to LISTEN and to LEARN from others. Push yourself out of your comfort zone, learn about your racial biases and educate yourself. Parents have the great responsibility to show our children how to amplify change in this world and how to be an ally. ⁣
