Non-Toxic Teen and Tween Products
Here is a sample script of how I like to explain getting a period to tweens, along with some non-toxic suggestions for a tween gift basket.
“Each month something called the placenta builds up inside of you to help feed a baby. When there is no baby, the placenta comes out of you. It does not hurt when you’re bleeding. Whenever you have any questions, always come to me and ask. I’ve put together a little bag for you to put in your backpack in case you get your period at school and I am not there. You can put the period underwear on and there will also be an extra pair of leggings in case you need them. If for some reason the underwear is not there, there are organic pads that go on your underwear that you can use. I will show you how to use them.”
If your child asks you a question and you don’t know the answer in the moment, you may always say: “That’s a great question. Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you.” See my highlights on where babies come from and period talk for more.
Here are all my scripts for talking to teens and tweens about what they use everyday

Body Wash
Teen skin changes fast, and this is usually the first product they start using daily on their own. Three we like: Aleavia, Local Revival, Everyone Shampoo/Bodywash and Primally Pure (USE CODE DRORGANICMOMMY10). All three skip the synthetic fragrance and harsh surfactants that show up in nearly every drugstore body wash marketed to this age group.
Shampoo + Conditioner
Hair care is where tweens and teens get the most product exposure, since it's every few days for years. Our picks: Fountainhead, Rahua, and Innersense*.
*The one we actually use.
Hair Gel
This is the category where clean options are hardest to find — most gels are a wall of synthetic fragrance and plastic-based polymers. The one we love is from Rowe Casa. It holds without the crunch, and my kids will actually use it.
