Why are building blocks important? πŸ’“πŸ’“πŸ’“
It starts with your baby stacking blocks and seeing them fall. This is fun when your child is between 8-16 months because the concept of gravity is so exciting. There is a reason why seeing your design fall and fail is so important too. When they are stacking blocks they are learning how high something can go before it becomes unstable. They need to learn to sit with that failure and frustration as they rethink the play… β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
They ask themselves... How do I make my tower not fall? By having failures your child is learning to regroup. When they are a toddler, they really want their ideas to start working. They get the idea of bolstering the tower (do not give them this ideaβ€”because they will be so pleased with themselves when they figure it out). Seeing the moment they are proud is so gratifying. Sometimes I can have a vision and a goal, and I can do it on my own but sometimes I need help. Offering some verbal guidance may be warranted. Remember without failure, you cannot succeed. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
As your toddler becomes a preschooler, kindergartener, etc. you will begin adding more blocks and different sizes. This will allow them to construct bigger towers and push their limits which parallels their social-emotional growth in school.
