Should You Tell Your Kids Good Job?
Comment below if you always tell your kids, "Good Job!" 🧐🧐🧐
While it definitely feels good to you as the parent, it is actually not as helpful to your child. Saying "good job" is a form of external validation and sets your child up for needing positive reinforcement from others rather than feeling good about something they did on their own.
Thus, it's best to try and comment on the action rather than the effort. Phrases that you can say to help them build their sense of self-worth include: "you did xyz" "you did xyz by yourself!" or specifically on the action, "you put the clothes in the basket!"
I talk more about praise and what to do when others provide external praise to your child(ren) in my Instagram post here.
