Rugs and Carpets for Your Newborn

Carpet, unfortunately, can be toxic from the glues to the synthetic rubber and dyes, plastics and the pesticide-ridden materials used. They all contain endocrine disrupting chemicals meant to repel flames, water, and stains.

The glues that they use often contain formaldehyde and VOC's that will off-gas into the home environment. Carpet also tends to accumulate dust, dirt, pesticides, and other toxins brought in by our shoes and by our pet's feet.

What is the solution? If you cannot remove or replace your carpet, do not wear shoes in your home and wipe your pet's feet down before entering the home. Vacuum frequently and use an air purifier with a HEPA filter (see my amazon store for my favorites). Bring in indoor plants that help detoxify your home. Open your windows during the day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Now not all carpets and rugs are bad. There are some brands out there that have non-toxic options made of cotton, hemp or wool. I have tried a woven rug from @_willaby_ that I like and is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton gauze. Willaby’s collection is ethically sewn in the U.S. by skilled craftspeople. I am also excited about and waiting for my samples from @organicweave. Some other brands that are good are Earth Weave natural carpet and Nature's Carpet (dark green collection). The other important thing to get is natural rug pads made from wool or plant fiber.
