Here are the top reasons why I am not a fan of markers…

1. Sensory- crayons and paint offer a richer sensory experience

2.  Natural materials- waldorf focuses on using more natural materials and markers aren't natural as they are synthetic. Crayons are made of beeswax

3.  Artistic expression- crayons and paint offer more freedom for artistic expression. Provide more options for blending and textures where markers don't.

4.  Slower pace- crayons and paint force a child to go slower than using markers. And we want children slowing down so they build up that attention and focus (academic precursor)

5. Environmental - markers are made with plastic and want to teach kids to care about environmental impact. Markers also dry out quickly so more likely to be tossed in trash.
