Riding Bikes

Do your kids ride bikes? What age did they start? 🚲 🚲 🚲

I like to start with a balance bike meaning no pedals so that the child can learn to feel what it is like to push the bike without training wheels.

Typically, you can get this type of bike anywhere between 2 and 3 years of age depending on the child (sometimes a child may want to start at a younger age if they have older siblings.)

Between 5 to 6 years old is a great time to get a bike with pedals (no training wheels but you can bring them home if you like). I personally try to have them practice without training wheels as much as possible.

LANGUAGE to use: If your child seems hesitant, I would acknowledge and validate this concern and say β€œthis can be scary as it is new but just like when you learn to walk and jump, it takes practice. Sometimes you fall down, but you get back up.” Letting them know that you will hold on to them while they are pedaling will also help. Before starting, remind them of how they are able to stop the bike with one foot on the ground.
