My Favorite Gardening Tips
You don’t need a lot of space to start a garden. Here are some of my tips:
1) The simplest way to start is with basil and mint but remember to keep them in separate pots because mint is basically a weed & will take over your garden.
2) They now have do it yourself kits & vertical gardens like @lettucegrow that don’t take up a lot of space.
3) Planter boxes – I use untreated redwood. I don’t use a liner. I fill it with a combo of organic potting soil, organic compost, & organic topsoil. Most produce like good sunlight so take that into account when placing your garden.
4) I love growing kale. With kale, you can start with a seed or a plant. Technically a winter vegetable but they should grow all year. Sometimes aphids or other pests can infest your kale. I love to use lady bugs & plant various flowers like marigolds that are natural pesticides. You can also take an aluminum beer can & cut the top off and place in dirt around your kale as it will catch earwigs & slugs. I plant both curly & dino kale.
5) A lot of people ask me about growing potatoes since that is such a fun activity for my kids. While they are not the easiest to grow, it’s so much fun to dig for potatoes. I find it easiest to plant in a barrel because it eliminates the possibility of weeds and makes it easier to cover the stems with dirt as it grows. Make sure you dig 6-8 inches deep to plant your seed potatoes. A seed potato is intended for planting rather than eating as it’s tested & certified disease free. When the plant reaches ~foot tall, you want to bury the stem, then repeat process until it reaches top of barrel & then wait for plant to flower & then die off. You then stop watering it. You can harvest potatoes a couple weeks after the plant has died off. .
6) My favorite summer item to grow are sungold tomatoes. It’s best to start off with a plant & use support systems with twine to help keep your plant growing tall.
