Keeping Your Child Innocent Doesn't Mean Keeping Them Ignorant

The events that unfolded January 6th were shocking and I want to talk about the impact on our young children. We want to keep them innocent but not ignorant. It is easy to be glued to the TV but try to limit your young child's exposure. These are difficult concepts for even adults to understand.

When explaining this to your child and/or answering your child's questions, keep your answer simple and to the point. Remember, if you don't know the answer to a question, say "That's a great question and I want to think about it and get back to you." There is no rush in answering.

Most importantly, your child wants to know they are safe.

I have gotten so many dms on how to answer your child's questions so I have written out a sample script:

When your child asks:
What is happening? Why are people hurting each other?

Caregiver response: People in our country voted on who makes the rules to help make sure everyone is treated fairly and keep everybody safe. Some people were mad and some people were scared. Some people didn't use their kind words and helping hands to talk about what they were feeling. There are lots of helpers to keep everyone safe. Remember when we have strong feelings, we use our kind words and our helping hands. It is my job to keep you safe and you are safe. If you have any other questions, let me know.
